Scammers are currently using the pandemic as a way to steal money, and even worse, your personal information. In times like this, it is extremely valuable to pay close attention to the red flags of a potentially fraudulent situation. Giving scammers your personal Medicare information allows them to access your provider account, and possibly even other accounts as well.
We suggest:
Avoiding robocalls offering free respiratory masks
Social media posts seeking donations for fake charities
Advertising fast stimulus refunds
Advertising for unrealistic medications, cures, and/or special testing kits
Scams come in many different forms, the most popular being robocalls, emails, and social media advertisements. We are hoping that since you are now aware of these potential scams, that you can protect yourself in the future.
Although these suggestions may not protect you completely, they are a great place to start. If you experience a situation that we have not covered above and don’t fully “trust your gut” at that moment, we suggest ending communication immediately and then contact your provider for validation.
