An update from Anthem:
We worked closely with Sound Physicians for several months, but we didn’t reach a contract agreement with them. Sound Physicians left your clients’ plans on February 15, 2021.
Sound Physicians is a group that includes hospitalists ― licensed doctors who serve as attending physicians for inpatient hospital stays. In Virginia, Sound Physicians practices using the names listed at the following facilities:
Hospitalist Medicine Physicians of Fredericksburg at:
• Bon Secours Mercy Memorial Regional Medical Center
• Bon Secours Mercy St. Francis Medical Center
• Bon Secours Mercy St. Mary’s Medical Center
• Richmond Community Hospital
Hospitalist Medicine Physicians of Virginia at:
• Inova Alexandria Hospital
• Shenandoah Memorial Hospital
• Warren Memorial Hospital
• Winchester Memorial Center
• Winchester Rehabilitative Hospital
All of the listed hospitals are in Anthem’s plan networks.
Virginia’s new “surprise” or balance billing law protects Anthem fully insured group members who receive care from Sound Physicians doctors at these hospitals for an emergency or for certain scheduled procedures. Under the law, healthcare professionals can’t bill consumers for more than they would normally pay for the same service from a doctor in their plan’s network. This includes any copays, coinsurance, and deductibles.
The law applies to all fully insured, Virginia-regulated managed-care plans, state employee health benefit plans, and plans that members buy through the state health insurance exchange. Self-funded group plans must opt in to offer this protection to their employees.
